The Tragedy of Orphans in Africa
Through the impact of HIV/AIDS pandemic more and more children become orphans. Usually orphans remain in the family as long the family can afford it. But through the rapidly increased coverage of the pandemic whole families have died. The remaining children are often infected with the deadly virus.
Assistance from the government, social networks and social welfare are very weak, sometimes even not existent. The orphans are often forced to work as street vendors, beggars or prostitutes.
It is estimated that only 1/3 of the 15-year-old girls in Southern Africa today will reach the age of 35 . There is a clear realisation that HIV/AIDS is the greatest challenge to the economic and social well being of Africa. The reduction of HIV/AIDS has become a major focus and development aim of Government, NGO’s and community groups in Zambia and Africa as a whole.
Children’s Nest wants to create a human and Christian livelihood for orphans. Each child should have access to education, clothing, accommodation, food and care.
